Sexual Assault Presentation hosted by Kankakee Community College Student Life @ KCC. Living within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ) communities presents an entire world of challenges. Coming out and living authentically in the face of heterosexism and homophobia, finding support in the midst of anger and fear, every day can be a battle. Stereotypes and biases directly affect the way people hear our stories. When sexual violence occurs within the LGBTQ communities, the pressure to stay silent can feel debilitating. Gender identity and sexual orientation greatly impact the fears of reporting abusive relationships and sexual assault. When “he” is the perpetrator and “she” is the victim, where does the truth lie? What are the added barriers to coming forward? This program gets us thinking in a different direction with our myths and assumptions. What can we do to better support survivors? Learning how to intentionally use inclusive language when talking about sexual violence helps us to embrace the diversity in our world around us. Using real-life examples, this program examines how gender identity and sexual orientation affects sexual violence in a biased world.
