fortitude3How does one "shelter in place" without a home?

In the spring of 2019, Joseph's journey intersected with our shelter's outreach. His struggle with housing instability led him to our doors, seeking refuge and support. Even after securing an apartment, life threw him back into the throes of uncertainty when eviction hit in early 2020. As fate would have it, the pandemic's shadow loomed, and the shelter Joseph sought solace in had to shut its doors. However, through the timely aid of an Emergency Response Grant through the Community Foundation, Fortitude Community Outreach was able to offer him assistance.

The impact on Joseph's life was profound, especially when COVID-19 struck and the world was gripped by fear and uncertainty. The ability to offer hotel vouchers for isolation, continue providing meals and vital supplies, facilitate access to clothing, laundry services, and even haircuts during shelter in place turned a period of crisis into a manageable situation for the vulnerable homeless population.

Joseph's story wasn't just about survival; it was a testament to resilience, kindness, and community support. The rapid response from Fortitude, buoyed by emergency funding, became the bridge between despair and hope for not just Joseph but countless others facing similar trials. In early May 2020, Joseph tested positive for COVID-19 and required quarantine. Alone and facing isolation in a hotel room, Joseph found a lifeline through Fortitude's assistance. Essential items, including meals, toiletries, and crucial hygiene supplies, became his armor in the battle against the virus.

Through the provision of essential services and a steadfast presence, Fortitude didn't just offer aid; they provided a lifeline to hope, showcasing the incredible impact of unity and compassion in navigating even the most challenging of times.
